Operational activity Pakistani MPA have joined US and other coalition air craft to look for seaborne activity by Al Qaeda support ers in the Arabian Sea. Procurement Orion deliveries were delayed by the US embargo that blocked additional air force F-16s, but more may be delivered as part of the procurement package for the air force to replace all the Atlantiques. Chinese Z-9EC heli copters are being considered for use on new frigates. Fleet review The USA has also agreed to help the navy refurbish its two P-3C Orion MPA. Operational activity AH-1 Cobra gunships and other helicopters were used extensively in the search and destroy sweeps. Significant Pakistani forces are still deployed along the line of control in Kashmir and rely on helicopters for logistic support. Procurement The USA supplied 12 AH-1Fs during 2004 for use as spares for the existing fleet and negotiations are under way to sell another 20 examples, along with 40 ex-US Army UH-1Hs. The Mushshak is a locally built Saab MFI-17 Supporter. The Y-12s arrived in 1997 and 16 more Mi-17s were ordered in September 2001 and delivered a year later. It is envisaged that by 2010, army aviation will have 80 AH-1Fs, 60 UH-1Hs, 25 Mi- 17s, 5 AB205S, 40 Bell 407s, reconnaissance, VIR trainer and urban security helicopters. The delivery of 26 new Bell 412EP helicopters is under way. Fleet review The Pakistan army's AH-1Fs were delivered from 1984. These are armed with the TOW missile and have suf fered spares shortages because of the USA's arms sanctions. Most of the remaining army fleet is fixed- wing observation/liaison types. Operational activity Australia signed an agreement to send 300 police and civil servants to the country in December 2003 to help fight crime and corruption. Procurement UH-1Hs were donated by Australia, while Indonesia donated an NBO105 in 1999. Fleet review The Nomads are equipped with the Thales Searchwater radar and are used for coastal patrol. The other types are used for transport and surveillance of the border with Irian Jaya. Operational activity Small-scale counter-drug operations require regular air support for the army and police. Procurement Much of Paraguay's military fleet has been donated by others, principally Taiwan, which supplied AT-33s and UH-1Hs. Paraguay and Taiwan also discussed the donation of 12 F-5E/Fs for many years, but they were seen as too expensive to operate. In March 2003 a C- 212-400 was purchased from EADS Casa and work contracted to rebuild three already in service. Fleet review Armed Xavantes and a few Tucanos are the combat element of the air force. Much of the fleet is unservice able, with aircraft often used as spares sources to keep one or two flying. Asuncion's airport is also the base for Transporte Aereo Militar, the country's military-run air line. Although Paraguay is a land-locked country, it has a navy that patrols the Paraguay River. An aviation component flies river patrol and liaison missions, operating from river patrol vessels.
