Directory: commercial engines Model Max thrust (lb) Power max (SL) (shp) Notes/Description (inc submodel) Application Rolls-Royce rapidly accelerated its rise to the number two slot in the commercial engine world by clinching the launch order for the Boeing 7E7 from All Nippon Airways (ANA) of Japan with its Trent 1000. In addi tion, it completed one of its most active and successful periods in recent years by achieving on- time certification of the Trent 900 for the Airbus A380, just under 20 months after the first run of the engine. The ANA selection followed the decision by Boeing in April to award places on the 7E7 to R-R and General Electric. Preliminary design of the Trent 1000, which will cover the 53,000-70,000lb thrust (235-31 OkN) range, is expected to be com pleted next month, and the first engine is due to run in early 2006. Engine certification is expected in mid-2007, with flight tests due to start later that year and entry into service planned around March 2008. Risk and revenue sharing partners signed to the Trent 1000 effort now include Mitsubishi and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), with others - pos sibly including Volvo Aero - still to be signed. Work on the Trent 900, meanwhile, is moving from development to production and support, with the first engines already mounted on the A380 and a total of 18 units due for shipment to Toulouse to support the flight-test effort. In tests to date the engine has reached 93,000lb thrust on the test stand, but was certificated at 80,000lb to provide adequate growth margins. The Trent 900, derated to 70,000lb, will enter service with launch customer Singapore Airlines (SIA). In addition to SIA, the engine has also been selected for the A380 by Qantas, Virgin Atlantic and Lufthansa, giving R-R a roughly 48% market share of the selections to date. Risk and revenue partners on the Trent 900 include Avio, Goodrich, Hamilton Sundstrand, Honeywell, Marubeni, ITP and Volvo Aero with Samsung Techwin, KHI and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries acting as programme associates. The Trent 1000 and 900 are the fourth and fifth members of the family, which celebrated its 1,000 delivery in June with the handover of a Trent 800 to SIA for installation on the airline's 60th Boeing 777. Other family members continue to build R-R's presence in the market with the Trent 700 on the Airbus A330, and the Trent 500, which has exclusiv ity on the Airbus A340-500/600, entering service in 2002, with more than 530 ordered to-date. Additional Trent business came earlier in 2004 when Cathay Pacific ordered Trent 700/800S for its A330s and 777s respectively. At the start of the year the Hong Kong-based airline, a staunch R-R sup porter, ordered additional RB211-524H-T engines to power Boeing 747-400s that are being converted into freighters. Although work on the RB211 -535 line has slowed to a trickle as a result of Boeing's closure of its 757 line in Renton, some production continues to support spares and the Tupolev Tu- 204-120C, which was due to obtain European certification towards the end of 2004.
