Directory: commercial engines Model Max thrust (lb) Power max (SL) (shp) Notes/Description (inc submodel) Application State-owned ZMKB Progress is the design house for Ukraine's only engine manufacturer, Motor-Sich. The two enterprises are expected to merge. About 32,000 Motor-Sich engines are in service worldwide, provid ing a stable income from maintenance business. The largest single programme is the D-18T turbo- fan powering the Antonov An-124 and An-225 freighters. An improved version is offered for the An- 124-100M-150, with thrust increased from 51,000lb (225kN) to 55,000lb. A further variant is underdevel opment with an extended nozzle, noise-absorbent shrouding, extended air intake and redesigned fan. Feasibility studies are being done on a growth ver sion of the An-124-30. The D-27 propfan for the An-70 has been much criticised by the Russian air force and Stupino has started work on reshaping the SV-27 propellers to reduce noise levels. The Ukrainian air force is to take delivery of its first two An-70s in December. A turbofan version using the D-27 core has been shelved. The AI-22 turbofan, meanwhile, was devel oped under order from Tatarstan and the first engine went to test in September 2000. The D-36/436 series remains the CIS leader in terms of production rates, with about 40 deliveries expected in 2004. The engine has clocked up over 8 million hours on the Yakovlev Yak-42 airliner and An-72/74 transports. The D-36 Series 4A offers 3% higher fuel efficiency, 18,000h lifetime and 6,000h time between overhauls. The D-436 is produced jointly by risk-sharing partners Motor-Sich, MMPP Salyut and UMPO, which are seeking European certification, requiring a new round of tests since Russian and European certification standards for engines are not harmonised. Growth Tupolev Tu-334 variants are powered by the D-436T2 with an improved control system and thrust rising from 16,8001b to 18,0001b by increasing the turbine temperature. The 21,000lb-thrust D-436T3 features an additional compressor stage and a new wide-chord fan with reduced angular speeds. The latest offering is the D-436TX in the 26,500-30,000lb thrust class for the Multirole Transport Aircraft and the MS-21 short- to medium- range airliner family. This retains the same core, and has a reworked turbine and a geared wide- chord fan. The D-436-148 was selected for the An-148 fam ily of regional jets and is to set for certification in late 2005. The -148 provides thrust settings within the 14,000-19,000lb corridor without hardware changes. Its basic version is CIS champion for assigned lifetime with 20,000 cycles and 40,000 flight hours. Planned as a successor to the long-running CF6 family, GEnx architechture is based largely on that of the GE90. Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000 is another derivative of the successful Trent family, the engine winning the launch order to power the Boeing 7E7 from All Nippon Airways. The first engine is due to run in early 2006 www.flightinternational.com FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 23-29 NOVEMBER 2004 61
