As part of a major project, Flight is opening up its unique picture archive on the web. These are early days, but the aim is to present the entire image archive from almost a century of Flight stretching back to the dawn of powered flight in 1908, when the magazine first published.

To give you a taste of things to come, our team have volunteered their expertise and hand selected some of the best photographs of vintage aircraft from the following categories:

• Pre-1914
• 1930s (civil)
• 1930s (military)
• 1939-1945
• Post World War II
• Airliners 2006 images

In addition, we have pulled together some images from the realms of:

• Experimental & Prototypes
• Air races

New images and captions are still being added all the time but we hope you enjoy this first cut of our photographic collection.
