Malaysia Airlines has selected MTU to maintain the CFM International CFM56-7B engines which power a Boeing 737-800 fleet.

Encompassing more than 100 engines, the exclusive 10-year agreement is MTU’s largest CFM56-7B support deal, the German company confirms.

The deal covers repairs, overhauls, on-site support, lease-engine provision, life-limited parts management and engine trend monitoring, and spans the powerplants’ service life until retirement.

MTU says it will employ “smart strategies to minimise cost” as the engines near the end of their lives.

Malaysia Airlines chief executive Izham Ismail describes the deal as a “flexible, reliable service” that will provide “an optimised cost per flight-hour”.

MTU Maintenance Zhuhai – jointly owned with China Southern Airlines – will provide the services.

Cirium fleets data shows that Malaysia Airlines has 48 737-800s, alongside a long-haul fleet comprising Airbus A330s, A350s, A380s and a number of stored 777s.

Malaysia has ordered 15 Max 8s and 10 Max 10s.
