PICTURES: Air New Zealand takes delivery of first Boeing 787-9

Air New Zealand (ANZ) has taken delivery of the first Boeing 787-9 aircraft at a handover event in Everett on 9 July.

The Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered aircraft is the first of 10 787-9s the launch customer has on order. The aircraft is 6 metres longer than the 787-8 variant and also able to carry up to 40 more passengers, says Boeing.

ANZ's first 787-9 is painted in an unique all-black livery, and will be deployed on services from Auckland to Perth in October, and to Tokyo and Shanghai in November.

“It's a privilege to be the global launch customer for this aircraft and our team is looking forward to flying it home to New Zealand. The 787-9 is a real game changer and we can’t wait for our customers to experience it,” adds the airline’s chief executive Christopher Luxon.

Another of ANZ’s 787-9s will be on display at the Farnborough air show later this month
