Russian airframer Irkut has completed assembly of the second flight-test MC-21-300, almost 10 months since the maiden flight of the type.
The second aircraft incorporates modifications derived from data collated during the initial jet's test programme. Irkut has been reinforcing the MC-21's wing after strength tests last year.
Irkut says construction of the new aircraft has been "completed" and it was moved from the final assembly line to the flight-test division on 25 March.
The airframer is aiming to build four flight-test MC-21-300s – the third is being assembled in Irkutsk, while components and sections for the fourth are undergoing manufacture.
"Introduction of the new aircraft to flight-testing this year will address key tasks of the programme," says Russian trade minister Denis Manturov – securing "timely" certification, commencing serial production, and delivering the first customer aircraft.
Testing of the first MC-21 – powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1400G engines – has been conducted at the Gromov institute outside Moscow, while the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute has been carrying out static tests.
