Singapore Airlines is investing $350 million on new regional cabin products for its first 20 Boeing 787-10s.
The carrier unveiled the products to the media at a launch in Singapore, shortly after the jet arrived at Changi airport following a delivery flight from Charleston. Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that the 787-10 is also the first new aircraft type that SIA has taken from Boeing in 21 years, after the Boeing 777-200ER in May 1997.
The -10 is configured with 337 seats in two classes - 36 in business and 301 in economy.
SIA tells FlightGlobal the business class seats are "highly customised" and developed exclusively with Stelia Aerospace. These are configured in a staggered 1-2-1 front-facing layout, with each seat having aisle access.
The seats have a width of 20in in an upright position, which can be expanded to 26in by retracting the armrest. The seat fully reclines into a 76in full-flat bed.
In economy, the Star Alliance carrier is using the Recaro seat, the same as those on its newer and soon-to-be-reconfigured Airbus A380s. These seats, 17.5in wide, are configured in a nine-abreast layout.
SIA's 787s will be equipped with the Panasonic Avionics' eX3 inflight entertainment system. Business class seats will have an 18in full high-definition touchscreen monitor, while economy class seats will have an 11.6in monitor.
Inflight wifi connectivity will be provided by Panasonic's Global Communications Services (PGCS), while GSM connectivity services are by Aeromobile, a unit of PGCS.
"The 787-10 is a very important addition to the SIA family. I have very good confidence that it will set a new level of comfort for people who travel on medium-haul [services], because the product we're having on the 787-10 is something that is even better than what others are deploying on the long-haul [sectors]. I'm sure that it'll be something that our customers would love to travel on," says SIA's chief executive Goh Choon Phong.
Fleets Analyzer shows that Singapore Airlines has orders for 48 additional 787-10s.
