Sri Lanka's Government has appointed an acting chairman for national carrier SriLankan Airlines after incumbent PB Jayasundera was forced to step down.

The carrier says in a statement that Nishanta Wickremasinghe, who is an executive director of the airline, has been appointed acting chairman.

Wickremasinghe has been on the board of the airline since January 2006. He is currently general manager of James Finlay Plantation Holdings.

SriLankan does not elaborate on the reasons for Jayasundera's resignation. However Jayasundera, who had earlier resigned as the country's treasury secretary, stepped down soon after Sri Lanka's Supreme Court criticised him over his role in the controversial privatisation of a government-owned company.
