34° FLIGHT \PRIL 17TH, 1947 UNVEILED cated-plate "chassis," with extruded channel- section longitudinal side members. Detachable panels cover the sides of this portion. Flying controls are orthodox in operation and each surface is provided with a balance tab, the rudder and elevators also being fitted with separate trimmer tabs with electrical actuators. Hydraulic operation is used for the under- carriage, but mechanical release is also pro- vided. The tail wheel is likewise retractable. Fuel is carried in a central tank and two wing tanks, and provision is made for drop tanks under the outer main planes and under the fuselage The oil tank, designed for negative-g conditions, is located to the rear and top of the power plant. A tubular structure supports the Centaurus engine, and cooling is assisted by a fan on the spinner back plate. Two air intakes and an air cleaner are housed in each side of the centre plane. Data for the Y.A.i are as follows: span 44ft n^in; length 39ft 3^in ; wing area 361.5 sq ft; leading-edge sweepback (outer planes) J\ (c~wr Built to Specification E.16 43 but more generally known as the W.9, the Cierva helicopter is powered with a Gipsy Queen engine. Torque is balanced by jet reaction. An experimental fin is seen fitted. The upper drawing shows that in flight the BlackburnN.2 42 would have been remarkably clean. 15 deg 42 min; total fuel capacity (with drop tanks) 516 gallons. This interesting aircraft has lately commenced flying trials and performance figures are not yet available. It is now possible to mention and illustrate another un- usual Blackburn proposal for a fighter flying boat to Speci-. fication N.2/42. A Napier Sabre engine drives a contra- rotating airscrew and the aircraft embodies the Blackburn retractable planing bottom. BOULTON PAUL THE name Balliol T.i has been chosen for the Boulton -*- Paul Type P. 108 advanced training aircraft, some basic particulars of which were published in Flight of August 22nd, 1946. Designed for the Armstrong-Siddeley Mamba or Rolls-Royce Dart airscrew turbine units, the Balliol may fly initially with a piston engine. The span is 39ft 4m (21ft iin folded) and the length 34ft 4m. BRISTOL A MILITARY adaptation of the Bristol 170 (two •**• Hercules 131) has been designed to meet an official specification. The advantages of the 170 as a military transport are, of course, obvious. Typical alternative loads which might be carried are a 3-ton Fordson ; Austin or Bedford truck ; two 15-cwt trucks; one 15-cwt truck, a 25-pdr gun and two men; one 40 mm A.A. gun ; or 32 stretcher patients with six attendants. CIERVA 'THE Cierva E.16/43 helicopter, already known to readers •*• as the W.9, is officially classed as a communications aircraft. Features include hydraulic servo controls, auto- matic clutch engagement and torque balance by jet reaction at rear of fuselage. Data are: fuselage length 37ft; track 10ft; height 10ft; rotor diameter 36ft; engine Gipsy Queen 31. DE HAVILLAND HTWO developments of the de Havilland Vampire fighter •*• with Rolls-Royce Nene jet engine may now be men- tioned. These are the F.n with the Nene 1 and F.iv with an unspecified sub-type of power plant. The Vampire F.m has a de Havilland Goblin II turbine jet and is classed as a long-range interceptor, having a Reminiscent of the Beaufighter : the observer's enclosure onthe De Havilland Sea Hornet NF 21.
