Purdue also operates a DC-6A/B specially modified as a "flying teacher" to give lessons to some 500 schools by means of airborne television; this DC-6 is fitted with a 30ft-long nose antenna housing the TV transmitting aerial. Empire Airways Ltd—QEA can trace its history back to 1920 when QANTAS (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services) was founded on November 16 of that year, and on November 2, 1922, the company opened its first regular service between Charleville and Cloncurry. This was the first air service in Eastern Australia and it was operated by Armstrong Whitworth FK.8 biplanes. Qantas Empire Airways Ltd was founded in January 1934 by Qantas and Imperial Airways to operate the Singapore - Brisbane section of the England - Australia air route then about to be established. In December 1959 Quantas and BOAC celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Kangaroo Route from Sydney to London through Asia—still the longest air route in the world. Qantas was the first airline to operate round-the-world services through San Fran cisco and New York; these were inaugurated on January 14,1958, with Super Constellations. Qantas operates seven services a week on the Pacific from Sydney to San Francisco- one a week continuing to Vancouver and three a week continuing to London via New York. On the Kangaroo route there are five Boeing services and one Comet (chartered) service a week from Sydney to London via the Middle East. Qantas commenced trans-Pacific service in 1954 when it took over the Sydney - Fiji -Honolulu - San Francisco and Vancouver route of BCPA. The airline also operates from Sydney through Darwin to Manila, Hong Kong and Tokyo; also from Sydney through Melbourne and Perth to Johannes burg via the Cocos Islands and Mauritius. Quebecair Inc was incorporated in 1947 as Rimouski Airlines Ltd and took its present name in 1953. Services are operated across and on either side of the St Lawrence from Montreal in the west to Seven Islands, Wabush and Schefferville in the east. Head Office :WmaaAi, PQ, Canada. Queensland Airlines Pry Ltd was the name taken by Aircrafts Pty Ltd in 1947 when Butler Air Transport acquired control of the company by purchasing 93 per cent of the out standing stock. Queensland Airlines is now a subsidiary of Ansett Transport Industries Ltd. Working under its separate identity, the airline operates a network of services covering 2,700 miles in Queensland. REAL SA Transportes Aeros was founded in 1946 as Redes Estaduais Agreas Limitada (REAL), and operations began on February 7 of that year between Sao Paulo and Rio with a single DC-3. By a series of mergers of and acquisitions in no less than 14 Brazilian airlines REAL has become the largest airline in South America. In 1954 an 87 per cent holding was acquired in Empresa de Trans portes Aerovias Brasil SA and its subsidiary Aeronorte, and two years later REAL acquired an 85 per cent holding in the Nacional Trans portes Aereos consortium. Transportes Aereos Salvador was acquired in 1957 but continues to operate under its own name. In addition to its Brazilian domestic services, which cover a considerable route mileage, REAL operates L.1049H services northwards to Port of Spain, Caracas, Miami, Lima, Bogota, Mexico City and Los Angeles. Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Ascuncion are also served. In 1960 the Los Angeles route was extended to Tokyo via Honolulu and Wake Island, thus making REAL the first Latin American carrier to serve Japan, but this service was recently suspended because of the integration of Varig and REAL. Varig purchased a half-share in Aerovias Brasilia—REAL'S international division—in May 1961. Varig purchased the whole of REAL in August 1961 and REAL-Aerovias now operates as Varig-REAL. This concern was founded in 1932 but operated mainly charter services until 1948 when CAB granted the company a certificate of public convenience and necessity. Services are operated from Anchorage through the Aleutians to Attu and the company is authorized to fly on an irregular basis between any of its certificated points and the Pribilof Islands. Fleet: three DC-3, one Sikorsky S-43, one Goose, two DC-4. Reseau Aerien Interinsulaire—RAI began services in 1951, Unking points in the Society Islands, some of which were previously served by Air Tahiti and TRAPAS. Points served apart from Papeete in Tahiti are Raiatea, Huahine and Bora Bora. The French airline TAI has acquired a controlling share in RAI. Head Office: Papeete, Tahiti. Fleet: one Catalina, one Sandringham Resort Airlines Inc is a US non-scheduled carrier that specialized in the operation of inclusive holiday tours to the Caribbean and also in military charter flying. The company is controlled by the Townsend Corporation of America. Resort's operating licence, awarded in 1949, was withdrawn last year by the CAB because it had ceased to operate. Fleet: one L.1049H (leased to TWA), one L.1049G, three DC-4. Rhodesian Air Services (Pvt) Ltd. Little is known of this carrier except that in 1960 it purchased a Pionair from BEA. This air craft crashed at Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, on November 22, 1961. FLIGHT International, 12 April 1962 Riddle Airlines Inc is a leading all-cargo opera tor linking the US East Coast and the Mid- West to Miami and Puerto Rico. Cargo operations began between Puerto Rico and New York in 1947, and in 1951 the company became a certificated all-cargo carrier linking various cities in Puerto Rico via Miami. In 1955 Riddle was certificated to serve 13 additional cities in the US. The majority shareholders in Riddle are William R. Price, James H. Price and Robert M. Hewitt. Riddle commenced Argosy services on February 23, 1961, between Miami and San Juan. DC-7Cs acquired have been converted to DC-7F standard for use as freighters and for transatlantic group charter work. Head Office: Box 535, Miami, Florida, USA. Executives: Robert M. Robby's Aircraft Co Ltd has been engaged in agricultural and charter operations in South Australia since 1949. Aerial survey, crop spraying, top dressing and air ambulance work is also undertaken. Royal Air Cambodge opened operations on November 1, 1956, and is flying services from Pnom-Penh to Siem-Reap, Saigon and Hong Kong. Head Office: PO Box 539, Pnom-Penh, Cambodia. Executives: Huot Sam Ath, chairman; Jean Florent, general manager. Emplovees: 80. Fleet: DC-3 and Air France Boeing 707-328. Royal Air Maroc—Compagnie Nationale de Transports Aeriens operates services within North Africa and from North Africa to France, Spain, Germany and Switzerland. Tangier - Gibraltar and Casablanca - Dakar services are also operated. The airline was formed in July 1953 by the amalgamation of the Casablanca-based Compagnie Cherifienne de 1'Air (Air Atlas) and Compagnie Cherifienne de Transports Aeriens Air Maroc; the title Royal Air Maroc was taken in February 1957, Air Atlas was formed in 1946 and began operations with Junkers Ju52/3ms, while Air Maroc was founded in 1947 and began scheduled services in 1949. Agricul tural, aerial crane, search and rescue and forest seeding work is undertaken, also power line stringing.
