Mexicana—Compania de Mexicana Ayiacion SAwas founded on August 20, 1924, to carry pay- roll gold from Tampico to the oil fields in theState of Veracruz, thus avoiding the bandits who had been attacking the paymasterstravelling by surface. The original fleet consisted of single engined Lincoln Standardbiplanes. In 1929 Pan American Airways acquired 100 per cent of CMA's stock but theholding was subsequently considerably reduced and PanAm severed its link with Mexicanaon November 1, 1961, CMA, now the main Mexican private enterprise airline operates anetwork of services within Mexico and to San Antonio and Dallas (Texas), Los Angeles,Chicago, Montego Bay and Kingston (Jam- aica). Mexicanas—see Lineas Aereas Unidas Mexi- Middle East Airlines — Air Liban (MEAL)was until 1963 known as Middle East Airlines. MEA was founded as a private concern in 1945.In 1949 Pan American Airways acquired 35 per cent of MEA's stock, but withdrew fromthe company in 1955, when BOAC took a 48.5 per cent shareholding. In August 1961 MEAbought BOAC's shares in the company and the airline was then a completely independentLebanese organization. Since the merger with Air Liban in 1963 Air France has had a 30 percent holding in the new airline and MEA 70 per cent. Comet, Caravelle and Viscountservices are operated throughout the Middle East, Arabian Gulf and to Cairo, Ankara,Istanbul, Athens, Nicosia, Vienna, Geneva, Frankfurt, Rome, Aleppo, Jeddah, Aden andLondon. The network extends eastwards to Baghdad, Teheran, Karachi, and Bombay. Adaily Comet service is operated from the Arabian Gulf to London via Beirut. Mohawk Airlines was founded in 1945 as anintra-state carrier with the title Robinson Air- lines. The company took its present name in1952 and is now operating routes in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island,Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and to Toronto,Canada. Services are operated between Christchurch, Mount Cook,Cromwell or Queenstown, Dunedin, Te Anau and Invercargill. Ski-equipped light aircraftoperate scenic air trips to Mount Cook and Fox Glacier.Head Office: PO Box 226, Timaru, New Zealand.Executives: H. R. Wigley, general manager; A. Nagasaki Airways is a Japanese domesticcarrier whose management visited France last September to evaluate the Potez 840 forpossible use on domestic routes. Nagasaki would undertake maintenance of any Potez840s ordered by Kansai Airlines, which is also interested in the type. Executives: Mr Nakamura, president; SusumuWatanabe, general manager. Naka Japan Airlines (Naha Nihon Koku K.Kaisha) is a Japanese taxi and charter operator that also undertakes various types of aerialwork. Namakwaland Ludgiens (Edms) Beperk beganoperating a twice-weekly service in 1961 be- tween Capetown and Springbok in the CapeProvince of South Africa. Naples Airlines operates an intrastate seasonalservice in Florida between Miami and Naples that begins in December and ends on April30. Fleet: L.10A Electra, Cessna 310, PiperApache, Piper Comanche, Cessna 172. National Airlines was founded as an intra-stateoperator and began scheduled services on October 15, 1934, with two Ryan monoplanesover a 142-mile route between St Petersburg and Daytona Beach. The airline now operatesa network extending from Boston, New York and Washington down the eastern US sea-board to Tampa and Miami. Routes from Jacksonville and Miami stretch west to NewOrleans and Houston, and on to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.There is also a New York - Miami all-freight service operated with Electras. On December 10, 1958, National became thefirst US domestic carrier to operate jet services using Boeing 707-121s leased from PanAmuntil May 15, 1959. DC-8s now operate daily non-stop New York - Miami services andservices through New Orleans and Houston to the West Coast. National commencedElectra services on April 23, 1959.
