26 Rolis-Royce/MAN RBI93 vectored thrust-twin-spool curbofan. No design details revealed. Rating, 10,0001b. Weight, l,74llb. Diameter, 33in. (Picture shows model) AERO ENGINES . . . 28 per cent at MAN, 44 per cent at Hispano-Suiza, 20 per cent at R-R, and 8 per cent at Fabrique Nationale. As a joint venture, MAN and R-R last year received an £8 million German Defence Ministry contract for development of the RB.193 vectored thrust turbofan. This engine, rated at 10,0001b, comprises the lift/ cruise power unit for the VAK 191B V/STOL strike fighter. It is scheduled to run this year and flight standard engines have to be available for the 191B in 1968. Development of the earlier R-R/MAN RB.153 turbofan for the EWR-Sud VJ101D, is now limited to ad hoc testing following cancellation of the aircraft. MAN, during 1966, also acquired a licence for the General Electric T64 turbo- shaft/turboprop engine for possible use in European-built or operated medium or heavy helicopters and other applications. Any production of the engine would be undertaken jointly with Bristol Siddeley, holders of a licence for the T64 since 1964. MAN's other activities concern the series of small turbines developed by BMW Triebwerkbau which merged with MAN some 18 months ago. These comprise the 60 to 100 s.h.p. 6012 turboshaft a version of which powers the Dornier Do32 heli- copter, the 217 to 370 s.h.p. 6022 turboshaft flying in one version in the Bolkow B6105 helicopter, and the lOOlb-thrust 8026 turbojet proposed for use in powered sail- planes, missiles and target drones. INDIA HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd) Bangalore. HAL has been largely engaged on licensed manufacture of Bristol Siddeley Orpheus 701 and 703 turbojets for HAL-built Hawker Siddeley Gnat and Hindustan HF-24 Marut fighters. The company also holds licences to build the R-R Dart 531 turboprop for Indian-built Hawker Siddeley 748 transports, and the Turbomeca Artouste turboshaft to power Hindustan-built Sud-Aviation Alouette helicopters. The company is developing a small indigenous turbojet of around 3,0001b thrust and designated the HJE-2500. This is intended as a replace- ment engine for the 2,5001b BSE Viper Mk 22/8 at present powering the Hindustan HJT-16 trainer. ITALY AGUSTA (Agnsta Meccanica Verghera) Gallarate. Agusta's turbine activity is concerned with the 320 s.h.p. TAA230 turboshaft, com- prising a Turbomeca TM-251 engine (essentially an Astazou with single-stage centrifugal compressor) for which the Italian company supplies the reduction gearbox. In addition to powering the Agusta A.105 light helicopter, the TAA230 flew last year in the A.106 ASW light helicopter. Agusta also manufactures a series of light two- and four-cylinder piston engines ranging from 41 to 138 b.h.p. These power light aircraft and helicopters. FIAT (Society per Azioni Fiat) Turin. As Italy's largest aero engine concern, Fiat has been engaged in licensed manu- facture of the Bristol Siddeley Orpheus 803 (as the Fiat 4023 and 4024) for the Fiat G.91 fighter and trainer. Having previously also licence-built the General Electric J79- GE-11A for European F-104Gs, Fiat is now assembling J79/J1Q engines of 17,9001b thrust for Italian Air Force F-104S fighters. The J79/JlQs are supplied to Fiat by GE as major sub-assemblies. PIAGGIO (Industrie Aeronautiche e Meccaniche Rinaldo Piaggio SPA) Genoa. The aero engine division of Piaggio license manufacturers Bristol Siddeley Viper turbo- jets for Macchi MB326 trainers, and Lycoming T53 turboshafts for Italian Air Force Agusta-Bell 204B helicopters. The company also produces the Lycoming GO-480 and VO-540 piston engines. JAPAN IHI (Ishikawajuna-Harima Jukogyo Kabu- staiki Kaisha) Tokyo. The Aircraft Engine Division of the Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co has major ties with GE and licence manu- factures that company's J79 turbojet as the J79-IHI-11A for Japanese F-104s, the CT58 turboshaft as the CT58-IHI-110-1 for Japanese-built S-61, S-62 and KV-107 helicopters, and the T64 turboshaft as the T64-IHI-10 for the P2V-7 kai and PX-S. The company also has its own indigenous designs of turbine, comprising the J3-IHI-7 3,0851b-thrust turbojet powering the Fuji TIB trainer and the P2V-7 kai, and the JR-200 lift jet aimed at a thrust/weight ratio of 20:1. If a General Electric engine is selected for the NAMC C-X transport, it would be licence-built by IHI. POLAND OKL (Osrodek Konsrrukcji Lotnczyck) Warsaw. A series of low thrust turbojets have been developed by the Polish Aircraft Construc- tion Centre, including the 8821b TO-1 centrifugal unit, and 1,760 and 2,2051b FLIGHT International, 5 January /-»- SO axial designs. A larger engine has beer, flight tested. The Centre also manufacture Russian engines under licence. SPAIN ENMA (Empyesa National de Motores dt Aviacion) Madrid. Piston engine manufacture concerns a 93 h.p. four-cylinder horizontally-opposec unit, a series of four-cylinder inverted in. line models covering 125 to 150 b.h.p., ant a seven-cylinder radial of 275 b.h.p Licence manufacture of the Turbomeca Marbore II turbojet and overhaul o! Spanish-operated Artouste turboshafts j. also undertaken. SWEDEN FLYGMOTOR (Svenska Flygmotor) Trollhatan. Major development activity of Flygmotor concerns the RM8 afterburning turbofan for the Saab Viggen attack fighter. The RM8 is a supersonic military develop ment of the P&W JT8D subsonic civil; turbofan for which Flygmotor holds a' licence. Afterburning raises the approxi- mately 15,2001b basic rating to around- 26,4001b. Flight standard RM8s wert delivered to Saab last October and first? flight of the Viggen is scheduled for earl)' this year. Well over l.OOOhr bench testing has been completed on the initial batch of: development engines. Licensed manufacture; of the Rolls-Royce Avon RB.146 continues' as the RM6C, power unit for the Saab 35» SWITZERLAND SULZER (Gebriider Sulzer AG) Winterthur. Sulzer is the main contractor for Swiss! licensed manufacture of the SNECMA Atari 9C for Swiss Air Force Mirage HIS I intercepted and IIIRS reconnaissance air-J craft. A total of 50 Mirage are on order! Four Sulzer factories are involved together I with a number of specialist sub-contractors,;[ SAURER (Adolph Saurer Ltd) Arbon. Saurer has developed a small 15 h.p. single-! shaft turboshaft for APU duties in the HFBil 320 Hansa. Designated the GT-15, it drivesl the aircraft's d.c. generator and cabin | blower.
