986 WM l- PLANS MOOIM FOR LANDING FLIGHT International, 12 June 1969 THE flight plans for the Apollo 11 Moon-landing mission were recently detailed by NASA. The prime flight crew will be Neil A. Armstrong (space craft commander), Edwin E. Aldrin (lunar-module pilot) and Michael Collins (command-module pilot). All have made previous spaceflights: Armstrong was commander of the Gemini 8 flight (March 16, 1966), Aldrin and Collins were pilots respectively of Gemini 12 (November 11, 1966), and Gemini 10 (July 18, 1966). Armstrong is also renowned as one of the 12 X-15 pilots and has much experience on the Bell LLRVs (lunar landing research vehicles). The back-up crew is James A. Lovell (commander), William Anders (command-module pilot) and Fred W. Haise (lunar- module pilot). Lovell was command-module pilot of the highly successful Moon-orbiting Apollo 8 flight last Decem ber, while Anders was lunar-module pilot on the same flight. The nominal flight plan for Apollo 11 is for lift-off at 1432 EST on Wednesday, July 16. The LM will be inserted into orbit around the Moon at 1827 BST on Saturday, July 19, and, at 1814 BST on the following day, its engine will be fired to place the LM into a descent trajectory. Touchdown on the surface of the Moon will take place at 1922 BST on Sunday, July 20. Following a complete check-out of the LM the two astronauts will eat a meal, and then take a 4hr sleep. At 0512 BST on Monday, July 21, the LM will be depres- CSM GUIDANCE SYSTEM REFERENCE ALIGNMENT ORItNT CSM FOR CM/SM SEPARATION VS CM/SM SEPARATION (79 ORIENT CM FOR REENTRY (£0' ^>|CSM GUIDANCE SYSTEM n ' REFERENCE ALIGNMENT ^-v.
