958 FLIGHT International, 25 September 1976 WORLD NEWS Space Shuttle roll-out Appropriately named Enterprise, the flagship of America's fleet of five Space Shuttle Orbiters was rolled out of Palmdale, California, on September 17. These pictures, taken earlier last week on a "dry run," emphasise the bulk of the manned Orbiter, which is about as big as a DC-9. Nasa, State and Congressional officials were on hand to christen Orbiter 101, which will next year begin the Shuttle trials programme with a series of glide tests from the Hugh Drydon Flight Research Centre. The honour of making the first full orbital mission will go to Orbiter 102 in 1979. Vehicle 101 will be refurbished after its glide tests and will join the orbital programme later. Crew for the first air-launched tests comprises Fred Haise (com mander), left, and Gordon Fullerton (pilot), right, in the Orbiter flight-deck picture. A feature article, "Shuttle Debut," begins on page 975.
