FLIGHT International, 16 May 198/ 1417 World airline directory Britannia Airways' fleet consists solely of more than two dozen Hoeing 737s ing London with Lagos and Kano, and a North Atlantic service linking Hous ton and Atlanta with Manchester, Prest-wick and London. Passenger charter flights are undertaken to destinations in Europe and North Africa together with worldwide cargo charters. BCal has a minority holding in Sierra Leone Airways and Gambia Airways and assists in the management of both. The airline is also associated with British Airways Helicopters and the British Airports Authority in the operation of the Gatwick-Heathrow Airlink sched uled helicopter service. BCal has been awarded route licences for Dallas/Fort Worth, St Louis and Denver in the USA. BCal has been awarded the Hong Kong route (services started last August) and has applied to extend this service to Manila, The airline has also been awarded rights from Gatwick to Cologne/Bonn, Hamburg, Hanover. Scheduled passenger and cargo services were started in 1953 and now link the East Midlands Airport with Amsterdam, Belfast, Dublin, Glas gow, Jersey, Guernsey, London Heath row, and Paris; from London Heathrow to Birmingham, Teesside, Liverpool, Leeds/Bradford and the Isle of Man; London Gatwick to Belfast; Birmingham and the Channel Islands from nine UK points. Services are also operated from Liverpool to Belfast and the Isle of Man. BMA also operates a specialist overseas leasing service with Boeing 707s, providing operational support to national flag carriers in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Originally a private company, BMA's principal share holding was acquired in 1969 by the Minster Assets investment and banking group, from whom the airline was pur chased in 1978 by a consortium of British Midland Directors, headed by Michael Bishop. Scheduled operations began in June 1972 and now cover passenger services link ing Plymouth with Jersey, Guernsey, the Scilly Isles, Morlaix, Brest, Cherbourg, Cork, Southampton, London Gatwick and Birmingham; Exeter with the Scilly Isles; Southampton with Cherbourg; and Newquay (St Mawgan) with the Scilly Isles, Southampton, London Heath row, Manchester and Aberdeen. Since October 1979 Brymon has operated the London Gatwick-Birmingham route in collaboration with British Caledonian. Bursa Hava Yollari (BHY-Bursa Air lines) was formed in April 1977 to operate scheduled passenger services between Bursa, a city on the coast of the Marmara Sea in north-west Turkey, and Istanbul. Services began in August 1977 and in early 1979 BHY began flying U international routes between Istanbul and London, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Stuttgart and Cyprus using DC-8 air craft. Passenger and cargo charters are operated by Aviocars on domestic ser vices.
