WORLD AIRLINE DIRECTORY Air Rwanda (Societe Nationale De Transports Aeriens du Rwanda) was formed in 1975. Air Senegal (Societe Nationale de Transport Aeriens—Sonatra) was formed on July 1, 1971, when the Government of Senegal nationalised Air Senegal (Compagnie Senegalaise de Transports Aeri ens), formed originally in 1962 to succeed Ardic Aviation. Stockholders in the airline include the Government with 50 per cent, Air Afrique (40 per cent) and private interests with 10 per cent. Sched uled passenger services are operated from Dakar to Bakel, Kedougou, Matam, Kaedi, Podor, Richard- Toll Saint-Louise, Simenti, Niokolo-Koba, Tambacounda, Kayes, Ziguinchor, Kolda, Bathurst, Cap Skirring, Bissau, Conakry, Praia, and Banjul. Fleet: two HS.748, two Twin Otter, one Aztec. Air Seychelles is the Government-owned national airline originally founded as Seychelles Airlines in September 1977. Scheduled services are provided between Mahe and the islands of Preslin and Fregate, and international scheduled services linking Mahe with London and Frankfurt are operated in conjunc tion with British Caledonian using the latter's DC-1Q- 30 aircraft. Air Tanzania was established on March 11, 1977, to operate services suspended following the collapse of East African Airways, jointly owned by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Operations began in June 1977 and now cover a 21-point domestic network plus international services to Bujumbura, Kigali, Lusaka, Harare, Seychelles, Antananarivo, Muscat, Djibouti, Dubai and Blantyre. Stockholders are the Tchad Government (66 per cent), and UTA (34 per cent) which provides technical and opera tional assistance. Operations began on August 4, 1966, and currently link Ndjamena (formerly Fort Lamy) with Mongo, Abecher, Bangui, Geneina, Moundou, and Sarh. Air Tungaru, the national airline of the Republic of Kiribati (formerly known as the Gilbert Islands), was formed on October 31, 1977. Domestic scheduled passenger and cargo services throughout Kiribati were taken over from Air Pacific on April 1, 1978. International services also link Tarawa, the Capital, with Majuro, Funafuti, Nandi and Honolulu (via Christmas Island). Air UK was formed on January 1, 1980, when British Island Airways BIA/Air West, Air Anglia and Air Wales were merged into a single entity. All four airlines were members of the British and Common wealth Shipping Group. Air UK is a wholly owned subsidiary of British Air Transport Holdings which is owned 90 per cent by British and Commonwealth Shipping and 10 per cent by Eagle Star Insurance. BIA, formed in 1970, had previously undergone several changes of identity, its earliest antecedents (Jersey Airlines, Manx Airlines, and Silver City Airways) dating back to the early post-war years. Exeter-based Air Westward, formed in 1977 by West ward TV, was taken over by B & C in March 1979 and absorbed as BIA/Air West. Air Anglia, itself formed in 1970 from a merger of Norfolk Airways, Anglian Air Charter, and Rig Air, became part of the B & C Group in April 1979. Cardiff-based Air Wales, formed in August 1977, ceased operations in April 1979 and was taken over and absorbed into Air Anglia in June 1979. The resulting extensive sched uled passenger and cargo network currently serves Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Belfast, Bergen, Brussels, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Esbjerg, Exeter, Glasgow, Guernsey, Humberside, Jersey, Leeds/Bradford, London (Heathrow), London (Stansted), Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Paris, South ampton, Stavanger, and Teesside. Services from London (Stansted) to Amsterdam were launched in November 1981, the first international scheduled operations from London's third airport for more than ten years, followed by services to Brussels. Traffic rights between Stansted and Copenhagen are awaited. Jet equipment has been re-introduced following the award of the Glasgow-Newcastle- Amsterdam route. Air UK also operate ad hoc char ters. Air Vanuatu was formed early in 1981 as the national airline of Vanuatu (until July 1980 the New Hebrides Anglo-French condominium). Stockholders are the Government with 60 per cent and Ansett Transport Industries with 40 per cent. Scheduled passenger, cargo, and mail services began in September 1981, linking the capital Port Vila (Bauerfield Airport) with Sydney. Air Via is a proposed new US schedule operator to be based in San Jose (California). Intial plans call for non-stop passenger services between San Jose and New York to commence this year utilising three Boeing 727-200 aircraft fitted with long-range fuel tanks. International scheduled passenger services are operated from Ouagadougou to Bamako (Mali), Bouake (Ivory Coast), Cotonou (Benin) and Lome (Togo), together with domestic flights to Bobo-Dioulasso, Dori, Gorom, Sebba, Diapaga, Fada, Bogande, and Pama. Airways International Cymru is a new charter operator providing passenger services from Cardiff to destinations in Europe and the Mediterranean. Air Wisconsin commenced scheduled commuter operations in August 1965 and has grown into a large US regional airline providing scheduled passenger, cargo and mail services to 15 points in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
