WORLD'S AIR FORCES Servicio Aeronaval de la Marina Peruana Fixed-wing maritime patrol duties are flown by S-2 Trackers and a single F.27 Maritime from the Peruvian Navy's main base of Jorge Chavez near Lima. A second F.27 crashed in June 1986. The Navy also has a shipboard ASW capability provided by a fleet of AB.212ASWs with Sea Killer missiles for use from frigates, plus Agusta SH-3 Sea Kings armed with AM-39 Exocets for shipping attacks. Aviacion del Ejercito Peruano The Peruvian Army air arm is principally a trans port force with Mi-8s as its mainstay. The review of the Mi-17 and UH-60 by the Air Force also extends to the Army. The Army's commit ment to operations in jungle and mountain regions, where helicopters are ideal, explains the comparatively small number of fixed-wing aircraft in service. Philippines Philippine Air Force Following the over throw of the Marcos regime in 1986, the PAF, like the other branches of the armed forces, underwent command changes and faces severe funding constraints. The F-8 Crusaders, which have always been costly to maintain, are to be withdrawn, some two years before their previously planned retirement date. Additional secondhand F-5As, or F-5E Tigers if available, may be purchased to replace the Crusaders. Preliminary discussions with South Korea, where up to 24 F-5E/Fs may be on offer, took place in 1986. Other economy measures included the deactivation of some SF.260 train ers and the disposal of the oldest transports. Despite the critical lack of money, a letter of intent for 24 S.211 trainers was apparently signed in mid-1987. Ten more.ex-US Army UH-lHs were received under FMS funding in June 1987. A small Naval air arm continues to operate its fleet of transport and liaison aircraft, while Army helicopters are incorporated into the PAF for operational purposes. Also in Poland are the 350 or so aircraft of the Soviet 37th Air Army. As in other WarPac countries, the Air Force is seen primar ily as long-range, quick-reaction artillery for Army use, and the PWL's inventory reflects this philosophy. The service is organised on Soviet lines, with two or three squadrons per regiment. Each squadron is assigned an average of 15 aircraft, but some two squadron regiments operate up to 20 aircraft per squadron. The PWL is undergoing a modernisation pro gramme, with MiG-23s and Su-20s replacing Lim-5/6s (Polish built MiG-17s) and Su-7s in the ground-attack role. There are six ground-attack regiments. Air defence still falls largely to 11 regiments of MiG-21s, although the first MiG-23 air defence regiment became operational in 1986. The air defence regiments are closely integrated with nine SAM regiments operating about 400 SA-2s and SA-3s from around 50 sites. Recon naissance forces include MiG-21RFs, Il-28s, and Lim-6s. Transports include An-12, An-26, 11-14 and An-2s, while a Warsaw-based Govern ment VIP flight has suitably configured Tu-134s, Il-18s, Yak-40s, and Mi-8 helicopters. Ten helicopter regiments operate Mi-2, Mi-4s and Mi-8s, plus Mi-24 Hind gunships. Weapons training and light-attack duties are flown by a single-seat version of the indigenous TS-11 Iskra trainer. Other trainers are TS-8s, MiG- 15UTIs, MiG-21Us, and Su-7Us. The PZL Orlik may also be entering service to replace the TS-8, while the new 1-22 jet trainer will replace the TS-11. Norskie Lotnictwo Wojskowe The land- based Naval air arm operates a regiment of Lim-5s, probably to be replaced by Su-20s, in the attack role. It also has a regiment of MiG-21 interceptors and a squadron of Il-28s operating in the minelaying, torpedo, and reconnaissance roles. A small force of Mi-2s, Mi-4s, and Mi-8s has been joined by a squadron of Mi-14 Haze ASW/minesweeping helicopters. These will be delivered to Esquadra 601 from June 1988, after refurbishment by Lockheed and OGMA, thus releasing the C-130Hs for additional transport tasks. The TB-30 Epsilon has been selected, in its piston- engined form, to replace the ageing DHC-1 Chipmunks, and an order for 18 kits for assembly by OGMA was placed in October 1987. OGMA's new co-operation agreement on AMX may eventually lead to a FAP order for the aircraft. The other pressing need is for a new air defence fighter. Two squadrons of fighters are needed to replace the ex-Luftwaffe Fiat G-91s in the interceptor role. Meanwhile, the G-91s of Esquadra 301 at Montijo and 303 at Lajes, FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL, 28 November 1987
