KLM (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij NV), the national airline of the Netherlands, is now the oldest operating airline in the world, having initiated services between Amsterdam and London in 1920 with a two-passenger de Havilland DH-16. A European network was first established with services extended to Java in 1929. Operations were introduced in the West Indies in 1935 and were continued throughout the Second World War, enabling KLM to claim more than 70 years of continuous operation. KLM CityHopper, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of KLM, formed from the merged NLM CityHopper and Nether lines from 1 April, 1991. The airline has added Nuremburg, Mulhouse/Basle, Berlin Tegel, Dresden, Sta- vanger and Cork to its network of international sched uled passenger services operating from Amsterdam to Antwerp, Belfast, Birmingham, Bremen, Bristol, Brussels, Cardiff, Diisseldorf, East Midlands, Guernsey, Hannover, Jersey, Luton, Luxembourg, Malmo, Southampton, Stras bourg and Stuttgart; Rotterdam to London (Heathrow) and Paris; Eindhoven to Hamburg, L&ndon (Heathrow and Gatwick) and Paris; and from Maastricht to London (Gatwick). Domestic services are also provided, linking Amsterdam with Eindhoven and Maastricht. History: NLM CityHopper/Netherlines was the revised name of NLM, following the acquisition of Netherlines in April 1988 by parent company KLM. The airline was formed in 1966. It has also introduced its first MD-11 into service. A nonstop service to Europe starts 25 March 1990, with Sydney planned for April 1990. History: The carrier was formed in June 1962 to succeed Korean National Airlines (formed in 1948). Korean was wholly-owned originally by the Government of Korea, but was acquired by the Han Jin Group in 1969. Kuwait Airways is setting up a temporary headquarters in Cairo, following invasion of its country by Iraqi forces in August 1990. All of its Airbus aircraft, two Boeing 767s, one 727, two Gulfstream G.IIls and two BAe 125s were seized by Iraq. The airline's London insurers paid $300 million to cover the loss. The 747 fleet, three 727s and one 767 are reported to be available for operation from Cairo to Dubai, Jeddah and Bahrain, with flights planned to Bombay, Europe and New York. The follow ing notes apply to the airline before the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq. The country's national carrier, provides scheduled passenger and cargo services from Kuwait to 41 cities in 38 countries in the Middle and Far East, Europe, North Africa and North America. History: The carrier was formed in March 1954 under the title Kuwait National Airways Company and became the Kuwait Airways Company in March 1957.
