Airlines based in the Asia Pacific region are always actively looking to recruit flight crew from Australia and New Zealand because of the extremely competent nature of candidates from this area. If you haven’t already taken a contract in these regions before, now could be the perfect time to venture further afield.
At the beginning of 2014 various industry reports showed uncertain prospects for regional airlines, as exemplified by Qantas suffering significant job cuts and AUD $2.8bn loss for the 2013-2014 financial year.
However, it’s not all bad news for pilots. As you know, the economic geography of the Asia Pacific region relies heavily on air travel and airlines within the region are still expanding rapidly so there will be a significant and growing demand for new and experienced pilots for many years to come.

In general, salaries in Australia have gone up but many pilots are still looking to reap the rewards of contracts abroad. Flying contracts in the Asia region are offered on very competitive rates, with many offering up to USD $16k per month plus bonuses (including travel allowances) and excellent holiday.
Luckily, you will be able to enjoy the sense of adventure that flying somewhere new brings, without a hefty relocation headache as most if not all of the contracts we represent are commutable, which allows you to continue living the lifestyle and culture that you’re used to, without uprooting your family.
There’s good news for the prospect of future contracts within Asia too with a recent report by Boeing saying: ‘The explosion in demand for air travel will mean 192,300 new pilots will be required by 2032, including 77,400, or 40% of them, in China.’ Both Boeing and Airbus have identified China as a major a geographical region with Airbus confirming deliveries of 25% of its global production.
Perhaps you have been put off by the complex recruitment process in China without knowing about the in-country support we provide in China for pilots attending assessment and selection. If China isn’t on your radar then you might consider India. The time to achieve security clearance is much the same as China but the language and lower cost of living is more attractive.

The application process can take some time but is worth the effort. Full relocation is the norm but a month on, month off roster are also popular.
