Libya's Afriqiyah Airways has identified the Airbus A330-200 involved in an accident at Tripoli today.

The carrier tells ATI that the aircraft was registered 5A-ONG, the airframe bearing serial number 1024.

All of Afriqiyah's A330s are fitted with General Electric CF6 engines. Aircraft 1024 was just eight months old, one of three A330s ordered by the Tripoli-based airline.

A spokeswoman for the carrier is unable to give further details on the accident, but says that it occurred "within the airport".

She cannot confirm immediate reports of survivors from among the 104 occupants.

Images from the scene show that the aircraft has disintegrated, with only the empennage recognisable.
