ATK has won a $15 million US Air Force Research Laboratory contract to demonstrate a precision-guided penetrating bomb, called Shredder, designed to neutralise chemical or biological weapons stored in hardened bunkers.

The Shredder munition has a modified BLU-109 penetrating warhead designed to minimise the release of chemical or biological agents into the atmosphere.

The munition is one of a number of agent defeat weapons under development by the US Air Force.

The Crash PAD (prompt agent defeat) munition, designed to neutralise chemical weapons with intense heat, was deployed during the Iraq war, as was the non-explosive PAW (passive attack weapon).
