L-3 Unmanned Systems (booth 401) is using AUVSI to display a new small tactical surveillance UAV.

Called APEX - Airborne Pursuit and Exploitation – it is designed to perform close-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

The all-electric aircraft can carry either an infrared sensor or Controp’s T-STAMP electro-optical/infrared sensor.

Because APEX does not require a runway and can be operated by just three people, it is ideal for first responder calls or over-the-hill surveillance in combat situations, according to L-3. The unmanned aircraft is currently in service with US forces.

Drawing power from a lithium polymer battery system, APEX boasts endurance of nearly 7h and a range of more than 54nm (100km).
