Arinc and Telenor’s joint connectivity venture, AeroMobile, has reached an agreement with Boeing to “explore the feasibility” of line-fitting its in-flight mobile phone system on new production aircraft.
AeroMobile has developed the system, using existing Inmarsat satellite communication equipment, to enable passengers to use mobile phones on board aircraft.
Efforts are continuing within the industry to secure regulatory and certification approvals to permit mobile phone use on board commercial aircraft.
The agreement with Boeing covers exploring line-fit options for widebody and narrowbody Boeing aircraft, starting with the 777 family. “Safety is of prime consideration, and a number of engineering tests are planned to validate the installation principles and theory,” say the two companies.
The agreement builds on AeroMobile’s involvement in the recent Boeing 777-200LR demonstration tour, which showcased a number of cabin features including AeroMobile’s phone connectivity service.
AeroMobile president Graham Lake says: “This agreement adds a new dimension to our relationship with Boeing that will allow both companies to meet the needs of their mutual customers.
“As we explore AeroMobile line-fit options on Boeing aircraft, we continue to support the Boeing 777-200LR marketing activities.”
Meanwhile AeroMobile rival and SITA/Airbus joint venture OnAir is working with telecommunications regulators to establish a series of regional frameworks to cover spectrum licensing for in-flight phone use on board airliners.
