Horizon Air, the sister company to Alaska Airlines, is evaluating whether to drop the Bombardier CRJ-700 from its fleet in favor of the Bombardier Q400.

Horizon is already retiring Q200s in favor of the Q400s. The airline has 20 CRJ700s, 16 Q200s and 36 Q400s.

The information was revealed on the Alaska Air Group earnings call 24 January.

Horizon officials said that the Q400 is proving highly economical in today’s high fuel-price environment. Although the CRJ has longer range than the Q400 and has been used by Horizon to replace or supplement many flights and routes of sister company Alaska Air, officials say that replacing the CRJ 700 may have enough economic advantages to outweigh the flexibility of two fleet types. Horizon may well move to a single fleet type of Q400s, officials said.
