Warner Robins Air Logistics Center has been selected over Boeing and Lockheed Martin to provide depot maintenance for the US Air Force's Lockheed Martin C-5A/B Galaxy transport aircraft.
The decision shifts heavy-cargo-aircraft overhaul from the San Antonio Air Logistics Center at Kelly AFB, Texas, due to close in 2001, to Warner Robins AFB, near Atlanta. The move eliminates 1,200 jobs in Texas while creating 725 positions in Georgia. Warner Robins Air Logistics Center is already responsible for the Boeing F-15 and the C-130, C-141 and U-2, all built by Lockheed.
The USAF conducted a public-private competition for the contract, valued at $434 million over the next seven years. Senior USAF officials say that the air-logistics centre provided the lowest bid - about 7% below those of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
