THE ROYAL NAVY HAS selected Rockwell's Collins Avionics & Communications division to supply joint tactical-information distribution system (JTIDS) terminals for installation on its British Aerospace Sea Harriers and Westland Sea King helicopters.
The contract covers an initial, 65 terminals with 30 options. Derived from Rockwell's IDS-2000 information distribution system, the units will provide "situational awareness" for flight-crews, by displaying real-time information on the precise location of friendly and enemy aircraft. The terminals also provide "secure" voice and data communications.
Some 80% cheaper than Rockwell's standard Class 2 JTIDS terminal, the IDS-2000 data-link is designed to provide a similar capability for a wider range of aircraft platforms.
