Roboticists could soon be treated like rock stars, thanks to the National Robotics Initiative, Tom Kalil, deputy director for policy at the Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in Wednesday's general session keynote.
"The technology is really nearing a tipping point in terms of functionality and the potential growth of the marketplace," Kalil said. "We see the potential for robotics to advance a broad range of national priorities."
Echoing Northrop Grumman President and CEO Wes Bush, Kalil pointed to export reform as a way to make NRI boost national security and economic growth.
"There's a real understanding of the need for reform, and that's why this has really been something the White House, the Department of Defense, the State Department and the Commerce Department have been working on to have higher walls on fewer items," Kalil said.
