Airbus has commenced production of the A350-1000 wing at its specialist UK plant in Broughton.

The wing for the largest member of the A350 family is based on that for the -900 but features modifications including an extended trailing edge.

Work on fixed trailing edge sections began in May.

Broughton’s facility will assemble the components of the wing which include the composite wing covers.

Rolls-Royce is developing the higher-thrust Trent XWB-97 for the type, which the manufacturer expects to fly on an Airbus A380 testbed towards the end of this year.

Final assembly of the A350-1000 is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2016.

Airbus states that customers have ordered 169 of the 366-seat type.
