Brussels Zaventem Airport is planning to spend BFr1 billion ($26 million) to build a new air traffic control tower. This has become necessary because the view of one of the runways from the existing tower will be obstructed when terminal construction work is completed. The new 75m (246ft)-high tower will be erected on the south-eastern end of the airport, next to the CANAC ATC complex. British Aerospace has been appointed project manager for the development of a new terminal at Guernsey Airport in the Channel Islands. Proposals for the £2.5 million ($4 million) development are due to be presented to the Island Development Committee in December. London City Airport could get its own rail link if the Docklands Light Railway raises the £75 million ($120 million) that is required to fund the planned expansion of a rail system that runs from east London to the City's financial centre. Lufthansa Cargo has taken a 29% stake in a joint venture to operate a new cargo terminal at Shanghai's soon-to-open Pudong International Airport. The cargo terminal, which serves Shanghai, is due to open in early October. The German company will operate the terminal with partners Jin Hai Jet Air, which holds 20%, and Pudong airport, with 51%. The terminal is expected to handle 500,000t of freight a year. The German carrier plans to increase freighter services from Frankfurt to Shanghai from twice-weekly to a daily service. The Aruba Airport Authority in the West Indies is raising an additional $19.2 million to help fund cost overruns for an improvement programme which has been under way at the Reina Beatrix International Airport since 1997. The main part of the expansion involves quadrupling terminal capacity at the Caribbean airport. The revised $89.6 million budget is $33.7 million over the original cost, and the remaining funds are being found from other sources. The first phase is scheduled to open soon.
