Boeing has broken ground on its new 777X composite wing centre in Everett, Washington.

The airframer says the one million square feet facility will be completed in May 2016.

"We're excited with the progress being made on this new facility that will play a crucial role in bringing the 777X to market," says Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and chief executive Ray Conner.

Boeing is investing more than $1 billion in the facility, situated on the north side of the main final assembly building. Boeing estimates that about 1,200 contract employees will be working at the centre at its peak.

First delivery of the 777X is slated for 2020. Boeing has received 300 orders and commitments for the 777X family so far.
