China's Haikou airport on the southern island province of Hainan has reported an 8% drop in profits for the first half of the year.

The net profit fell to 109 million yuan ($16 million) from 118 million yuan in the six months to 30 June, its parent company Hainan Meilan International Airport says in a Hong Kong stock exchange filing.

Total revenues dipped 1% to 210 million yuan from 213 million yuan, and a break-down shows aeronautical revenues remained almost unchanged at 160 million yuan. The airport attributes the falls in total revenues to the decline in the global economy.

It also says that Haikou airport hopes to generate more traffic longer-term from the provincial government's efforts to make Hainan a popular tourist destination. Hainan is one of the few tropical islands in China.
