Chinese heavy maintenance company Taikoo (Xiamen) Aircraft Engineering (TAECO) is to build a fifth hangar at its Xiamen Gaoqi International airport base.
TAECO, a subsidiary of Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering (HAECO), says in a statement that it has signed an agreement with the Xiamen government to build the fifth hangar and ancillary facilities. It says the capital cost will be around $70 million.
Completion
The fifth hangar is scheduled for completion in early 2007, says TAECO, and like the existing hangars will be able to accommodate two widebody aircraft at one time.
TAECO currently has three hangars while a fourth is under construction. The company announced last year that its fourth hangar would be completed in March 2006 but now says it is due to open by the end of this year.
The additional hangars "will provide the required additional capacity for the robust cargo conversion business and increasing workloads on heavy maintenance from our clients' expanding fleets," says TAECO.
TAECO is a joint venture between HAECO (54.55%), Xiamen Aviation Industry (10%), Boeing (9.09%), Cathay Pacific Airways (9.09%), Japan Airlines (9.09%) and Beijing Kailan Aviation Technology (8.18%).
It recently began work on the first Boeing 747-400 that will be converted into a freighter as part of Boeing's Special Freighter programme. The programme was launched with an order from Cathay early last year.
