Lufthansa Technik is developing a new intensive care patient transport unit (PTU) in partnership with Swiss medical aircraft interior specialist Aerolite Max Bucher.

Both companies have designed an existing PTU, of which approximately 50 units have been sold over the past years. But the new version is to become more lightweight and should be quicker to install on aircraft.

An undisclosed airline has ordered one unit and a VIP operator is negotiating to buy two PTUs, says LHT.

The equipment has a modular design, comprising a stretcher or bed, upper and lower cases – which are fitted via quick release locking mechanisms to the seat rails – and an optional rack for additional medical equipment.

Patients weighing up to 120kg (265lb) can be carried with the PTU onboard Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

LHT has partnered with Aerolite for the latter’s expertise in the medical air transport sector, while the MRO group has a customer base among VIP and special mission operators, says Thomas Kuhn, LHT’s director engineering services for VIP and executive jet maintenance.
