Middle Eastern carrier Emirates is to suspend its flights to the Ukrainian capital Kiev, just months after starting the route, owing to the political unrest in the state.

The airline has been operating four times per week from Dubai to Kiev using Airbus A340-500s.

Emirates, which started flying the route in January, will halt the service from 1 August. It says that the decision follows "weakened demand" in the wake of "ongoing political uncertainty" in Ukraine.

The airline has stopped taking bookings for the service and passengers will be transferred to other carriers. Dubai-based budget operation Flydubai is still offering travel on its Kiev route in August.

Emirates says it has "no immediate plans to reinstate the service" but says it will continue to watch developments in the region.
