FLEET WATCH: Orders May 2011

Airliner net orders came in at 38 for May as 39 new orders were offset by a single cancellation, with another two swaps.

Korean Air placed orders for five Airbus A330s, LAN Airlines ordered five Boeing 767s while Lufthansa Cargo Airlines ordered five Boeing 777s. Peru’s start-up airline CDS Regional Express ordered four Xian MA60 turboprops. Air Lease Corporation swapped an Airbus A320 for an A321 while TACA International Airlines also upgraded from the A319 to the A320 variant.

Boeing totalled 27 new orders in May while Airbus only received eight. In the regional market, only Xian received an order with four.

In the narrowbody market, a total of three 737s and two A320 orders were placed during the month. The orders for widebody aircraft were for 18 777s, six A330s and six 767s.

Overall, the order backlog for airliners ended May at 7,878, down 65 on the previous month.
