A Georgian Airways Bombardier CRJ100 being operated on a United Nations mission flight crashed yesterday while landing at Kinshasa Airport in Congo.
Only one of the 33 passengers on board survived the incident, says the UN, which adds that the CRJ100 had "missed the runway" after a flight from the north-eastern city of Kisangani.
The aircraft was attempting to land in heavy rain when it crashed at 13:30hr. It broke up into parts and caught fire, says Georgian Airways.
Twenty-nine passengers and four crew members were on board the aircraft, says the UN. All but five of the passengers worked for the UN, while the others were staff from international and non-governmental organisations, it adds.
The UN peacekeeping mission in Congo has set up a task force to investigate the incident, says the UN.
