Hainan Airlines is to become the first Chinese carrier to own shares in an airport with its purchase of a 25% stake in the new Haikou Meilan International Airport.

The domestic carrier will take the stake in the new international airport at Hainan province's capital, Haikou, with an initial investment of 200 million yuan ($23.9 million). The new airport will have a full registered share capital of 800 million yuan.

Hainan will be the second largest investor in the airport.
