The new Berlin Brandenburg International airport will "significantly increase the demand for premium-grade MRO services", predicts the head of Lufthansa Technik's Schönefeld maintenance centre, Thomas Rueckert.

An expansion of capacity at the two-hangar facility - which employs 450 people - is being considered. For 20 years the centre has carried out maintenance of Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 twinjets, including C checks. Customers have included Lufthansa, Condor Berlin, Germania, Germanwings, EasyJet and Hamburg International.

About 100 major and almost 200 minor checks are carried out at the centre each year, says Lufthansa Technik. In 2009, man hours totalled 360,000, and a "small increase" in utilisation is forecast for this year.
