Spanish carrier Iberia's new maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at Barcelona El Prat Airport officially opened today and will begin operations next month.

Iberia announced in 2006 that it would invest €26 million ($36.2 million) in the construction of a new 26,000m² (280,000ft²) MRO facility at El Prat that would provide line maintenance, minor repairs and overhaul services.

The new facility will eventually employ 200 people. An initial staff of 60 employees is currently undergoing training.

From next month, the new hangar will simultaneously carry out inspections on two aircraft, rising to three aircraft as its reaches full capacity.

The MRO facility is a joint project between Iberia and Barcelona Freeport Authority.
