The aviation infrastructure of the Palestinian Authority was destroyed on 3 December when the Israeli air force attacked the presidential heliport in Gaza. Israeli ground forces then rendered Dahania International Airport in the Gaza Strip unservicable by ploughing its single 1,400m (4,590ft) runway.

The actions were taken as part of Israel's reaction to the terror attacks by Palestinian groups on Israeli civilians. Dahania airport is the base of Palestinian Airlines and is also served by Egyptair and other airlines, mainly from Arab countries.

Flights to and from the airport were fully controlled by the Israeli air force. Palestinian Airlines has not operated from the airport for several months.
