Cargo Air Lines (CAL) has purchased a Boeing 747-400ERF, to complete the upgrade of its fleet to two new open nose and door freighters.
The Israel-based carrier, did not disclose the name of the seller but said the aircraft was built in 2007 and was equipped with GE engines.
The new 747-400ERF is the second freighter CAL has added this year after signing a long-term lease for a 747-400F in July and is expected to enter service “no later” than September. The second will come on stream in November.
CAL says the new freighters will allow it to operate non-stop from its Liege base to Latin America and Asia-Pacific and will “support and expand” CAL's specialisation in non-standard cargo such as oversize and overweight items, dangerous goods, cool chain and live animals.
“While many airlines are reducing or even terminating their freighter capacity, CAL is significantly extending flight distance capability, fuel consumption and loading capacity,” CAL says.
Flightglobal's Ascend Fleets database shows CAL has a fleet of two owned 747-200s built in 1980 and 1985 respectively.
