There is no evidence that either occupant of a Piper PA-44 from Lufthansa’s InterCockpit training school survived after the aircraft crashed into the Adriatic Sea.
The Croatian ministry of transport says a Croatian instructor and an Italian student were on board the twin-engined aircraft – registered D-GZXB – when it went missing after departing InterCockpit’s Zadar Airport base on 1 August.
Croatia’s ministry of defence says a naval minesweeper crew sighted wreckage at 01:15 on 3 August and that, by 09:25, underwater cameras confirmed the Piper had been found.
Search teams had concentrated on an area of the Adriatic southwest of Mezanj, an island about 30km west of Zadar, and along the coast of Dugi Otok. The sea depth in the area is about 60-70m (200-230ft).
No information has been disclosed regarding the circumstances of the accident.
InterCockpit is a subsidiary of Lufthansa Flight Training but specialises in training crews for carriers outside of Lufthansa Group.
