France's defence ministry has inked a €5 million ($7.1 million) supply contract for personal locator beacons with Elisa Electronic Systems, a subdivision of Haifa, Israel-based Elbit Systems.

The equipment will only be used by aircrew for search and rescue purposes during non-combat missions such as training sorties or flights over friendly territory.

Aside from the emitting the locator signal, the equipment provides two-way radio communication on very and ultra high frequencies (VHF/UHF).

It will be delivered to the French air force, army, navy and direction générale de l'armement (DGA) over the next two years as part of an agreement with the France-based prime contractor INEO Défense.
