Malaysia Airports has begun upgrading and expanding Penang International Airport.

The 250 million ringgit ($80.15 million) programme will be completed by June 2012, and involve upgrades to the main airport infrastructure, the terminal and airside facilities, says Malaysia's airports operator.

This will double the total floor space to 52,000sqm from 27,500sqm, and raise the total passenger capacity to 5 million annually from 3.5 million. The upgraded terminal will allow the segregation of international and domestic passengers, and further segregation of international arriving and departing passengers.

The airport will have more aircraft parking bays as well, says Malaysia Airports, which did not provide details.

Last year, the airport handled 3.31 million passengers and recorded 36,822 aircraft movements. As of November 2010, it had handled 3.71 million passengers, up 26.4% from a year before.
