UK carrier bmi has recruited former British Airways veteran Peter Spencer to bolster its senior management team.

It is understood that Spencer, who will join the carrier later this summer, will report to chief executive Nigel Turner and relieve him of some day-to-day responsibilities allowing Turner to focus more on strategic development.

Spencer arrives at bmi from Qatar Airways, where he was responsible for commercial operations for Europe, the Americas, Russia and the CIS. He took this post in late 2004 after spells heading up Maersk Air UK and UK regional carrier Duo Airways. Prior to this, in his first spell with Qatar Airways, Spencer acted as an executive advisor to the airline's chief executive Akbar Al Baker.

Spencer also spent 29 years at British Airways, 10 of which were in senior management positions.
