Changi Airports International (CAI) and Indian conglomerate Tata Group have jointly bid for the rights to develop and operate three airports in southern India.

A spokeswoman for CAI in Singapore says the two companies have jointly bid in a tender for the rights to develop and operate Gulbarga, Shimoga and Bijapur airports. These three airports are in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

CAI and Tata disclosed last November they were establishing a joint venture in India to pitch for airport development projects.

Currently CAI has no projects in India except for a technical services agreement with the Indian state government of Maharashtra to help drive operational efficiencies at Nagpur airport, says the spokeswoman.

India’s government is trying to turn Nagpur into the country’s main air cargo hub plus Boeing is investing in a new maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) company there.
