Preliminary information from the Indonesian government indicates that a missing Trigana Air ATR 42-300 has been found in a mountainous region of eastern Papua.

There is evidence, says the transport ministry, that the aircraft came down in the Ok Bape district in the Pegunungan Bintang regency.

It says that the “local community” has relayed information stating that the ATR crashed into Mount Tangok.

Flight IL257 had departed Jayapura’s Sentani airport at 14:22, heading south to Oksibil, where it was due to arrive at 15:04.

It was transporting 49 passengers and five crew. The condition of those on board is unclear.

The last contact between the turboprop at Oksibil airport’s air traffic control tower took place at 14:55, says the transport ministry.

It states that tower controllers subsequently attempted to contact the aircraft at 15:00, shortly before its scheduled landing time, but there was “no answer”.

Search and rescue personnel are examining the information the government has received in order to confirm the discovery and location of the wreckage.

There are no immediate details on meteorological conditions at the time of the disappearance. The ministry says it is establishing a crisis centre in response to the event.
