Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris will launch weekly flights between Culiacan in northwestern Mexico and Los Angeles from 4 August.

The airline filed for approval from the US Department of Transportation in May 2012 to begin operations on the route.

With the new flight, Volaris passengers will no longer need to connect through Guadalajara while flying between Culiacan and Los Angeles, says the carrier, which operates Airbus A320 family aircraft.

The airline already operates non-stop between Los Angeles and five Mexican cities: Morelia, Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Mexico City.

Aeromexico currently operates one-stop service between Culiacan and Los Angeles, schedules in Innovata show.
