Malaysian low-cost AirAsia is doubling its Kuala Lumpur-Tiruchirappalli service to twice-daily from once-daily from 1 September due to strong demand.

The airline says that it will operate an Airbus A320 to Tiruchirappali, or Trichy, a city in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu that was AirAsia's first Indian destination.

Kathleen Tan, the regional head of commercial at AirAsia, says that the airline was confident about the "under-served" route's popularity, given that the city was popular with Malaysian Hindus due to its proximity to a number of pilgrimage sites. Indian citizens were also using the service to come to Kuala Lumpur and fly on to other destinations in Southeast Asia, she adds.
